Sequoia Red Tea
A Rich & Ethereally Aromatic California Red Tea
Crafted on our California estate, Sequoia Red Tea is a refined and richly aromatic black tea—known in the East as hong cha or “red tea.” It embodies the elegant balance between depth and delicacy, offering a smooth, copper-red cup that glows like redwood bark in afternoon sun. The aroma is gentle yet complex, with notes of malted grain, soft honey, and a whisper of floral sweetness that lingers like morning mist among the trees.
Each sip unfolds in layers—first a mellow maltiness, then a silky sweetness that coats the palate without heaviness. The finish is clean and buoyant, leaving a quiet resonance rather than astringency. It’s a tea that invites reflection: strong enough to center you, yet so smooth and ethereal it seems to dissolve into light.
We named this tea Sequoia Red to honor the towering redwoods of California’s coast—symbols of endurance, grace, and rooted strength. Just as those trees thrive in coastal fog and golden light, this tea embodies a harmony of richness and serenity, expressing the quiet grandeur of California’s landscape in every cup.
Harvesting and Crafting
This tea is made from Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cultivars grown and hand-harvested on our estate. Only the tender top two leaves and a bud were plucked to ensure purity and finesse in the cup. After harvest:
The leaves were withered for 16 hours at approximately 70°F to reduce moisture and concentrate the natural sugars.
They were then rolled in the traditional orthodox method, gently bruising the leaf to initiate a deep, even oxidation.
The oxidation continued until the leaves turned a rich reddish-brown, developing their characteristic malty smoothness and copper liquor.
Finally, the leaves were slow-dried at low temperature to preserve the tea’s natural floral aroma and honeyed sweetness.
